Tricare Frustrations!!!

Our family has recently enrolled in Tricare Prime Insurance that is offered through the military. Scott is now an official retiree of the army after 20 years of service in the Army Reserves and the fact that he is now age 60. I have been frustrated from the start of this new insurance. I'm not familiar with the procedures and no one seems to offer any direction on the flow of things in the military health world. I'm constantly asking questions to folks that look at me like I should already know the answer. The up side to all of this so far, and it is a BIG up side, is that we are saving approximately $6700 a year in the cost of the insurance alone. Not to mention free scripts, free doctor visits, and free lab work but in order to take full advantage of all of the perks we need to go to the health clinic located at Fort Detrick. Sam and I had appointments a couple of weeks ago at 9:50 and 10:10 and we didn't get away from the clinic until noon. Sam was prescribed medicine and apparently the way it works is they key it right into the computer during your visit and then you walk across the hall to the pharmacy to pick it up. I wasn't told that until I asked someone how to get Sam's RX. We were so late getting out from our appointments that I decided to come back on another day to pick up the RX. The pharmacy hours are only 8-4 so trying to get there and not interfere with my own work schedule is a chore in itself. When I did get back to the Pharmacy, almost 2 weeks later, I first had to take a number a wait to be called. About 45 minutes later it was my turn, finally! I never in my wildest dreams thought that the RX wouldn't be ready but ... it wasn't. I had assumed that it would be filled once it was enter into the computer by the doctor. At that point I needed to be out of there in order to make it to work on time. So I told them I couldn't wait any longer and that I would send in Jenny that afternoon to pick up the RX. I decided rather than bother Jenny with it (she would have needed to drive to my work to pick up Sam's ID which you need in order to pick up someone else's script) I'd wait until my next late day for work (now late for me is only 10:45) to pick up the RX myself. That was today. Well I went in there and actually had my number called in about 15 minutes only to be told that again it was NOT ready. Now why on earth wasn't it? I talked to the folks behind the counter and even the pharmacist and no one gave me an answer that made any sense. I was almost in tears (one of my traits when I'm frustrated that I just hate) and I didn't have time to sit around while they filled it so I left, in a huff, extremely frustrated and upset.

I'm sending Scott in there next to get it ... he's retired, he's can sit there all bloomin day and wait. I think I can also get RX's filled at the local Walmart or Kmart although that would entail some copays, minimal I think. It may be worth it to avoid all of this frustration. Now I just need to find out how to get an actual written script to take to these stores. Oh my!! That's another day.

PS - I have no idea who this kid is but I found his picture online and I think I was feeling kinda like him today.

Jenny's College Application Essay Question

Jenny is busy these days preparing several college applications which she will be sending out in the not to distant future. I had the privilege of reading one of them the other day and thought I would share it. The prompt for the essay was:

"Tell us about an experience which, at the time, really felt like "the end of the world" -- but had it not happened, you would not be who you are today. Describe the process through which you discovered value in the negative."

I vividly remember this and yes I'm sure Jenny felt like it truly must be the end. I don't remember Jenny ever being as upset as she was on that fateful day.

"One day in early November last year, I drove home after school only to discover my iPod was missing from my car. Frantic, I desperately searched every nook and cranny of my car. Unable to find it, I thought back to earlier that morning. It was pouring when I had arrived at school, and I realized that due to the rain I had ran inside without stopping to lock my car. I knew then that my iPod had been stolen, and that I had to return to school to report it missing. During my desperate search to find my iPod, I had thrown my backpack on the driveway beside of my car and as I backed out of my driveway my backpack ended up underneath my car; underneath the wheels of my car. As I felt the bump of running over my backpack I jumped out of my car to assess the damages. Most of my binders survived, however my brother's PlayStation Portable did not. Now that I had ruined or lost about five hundred dollars in technology, I was very near my breaking point. However I had marching band practice in an hour, so had to prepare a façade of calmness and composure appropriate for drumming. As I arrived at band, I was soon approached by the Percussion Caption Head. Myself being the bass drum section leader, he said he had to have a talk with me. He said that he had to get rid of the first bass drum player due to her being constantly absent or suspended from school. Then he said that I, as second bass drummer, would be playing most if not all of her parts, and I would have to know them prior to our next competition, three days away. It was at this point that I decided that the world was in fact coming to an end. "

"This experience, while devastating and enraging at the time, actually had a positive affect on me and helped shape who I am today. Due to the fact it was my fault my iPod was stolen, I had to get a job to pay for a new one. By getting a job, not only was I able to save up and buy a newer, better iPod; but I also learned how to spend money responsibly, and to always save a good portion of your paycheck. The job I got to pay for my new iPod also helped me meet and befriend two deaf co-workers, which in turn resulted in learning sign language. From receiving all of the first bass drummer’s parts, I became a better drummer. I learned how to quickly memorize parts, and how to play more notes than I already had. Also, my fellow drum line members respected me more as a leader and role model for being able to quickly patch the hole in our tightly knitted section. In early November last year, I had a day that felt like the end of the world. However, it helped to positively shape me into who I am today."

The Secret Life of Bees

Wow - I had read this book several years ago and loved the story then ... and this past weekend I saw the movie. It was great! So many times I've gone to see movies that were made from books and been very dissappointed, not this time.

It's truly one of the nicest films I've seen in a long time! The acting was superb, as was the casting. You are taken from laughing one moment to feeling as though your heart is being tugged out of your body in the next moment. I definitely recommend seeing this film!

Fall

This past weekend was beautiful! The fall colors on the trees were just gorgeous. I really think fall is my favorite time of the year. Cool mornings, warm afternoons, cool evenings ... sweater weather. Sam and I noticed some signs along the side of the road that indicated a "Holiday Showcase with over 20 vendors". We decided to seek it out. Well this showcase was being held at a beautiful secluded spot at the top of Gambrill Mountain called Thorpwood. Check out their website if you get a chance. They are a totally green building which was very interesting in itself. Waterless toilets. I can't begin to tell you how long I looked for a way to flush! Maybe that's a story for another blog. http://www.thorpewood.org/ What we couldn't stop commenting on were the brightly colored trees as we drove through the mountains and the fact that I hadn't even thought to bring along my camera to capture any of this. When we arrived back home I logged on to the computer and thanks to Sarah, she had uploaded some pictures that she and Jenny had taken on their hike in the woods the week before, so ..... I decided to share a couple of them here for everyone to enjoy. I'm hoping to get out again this up coming weekend and capture a few pictures myself. The colors are changing so quickly.
